Aerial view of Chouwara Tannery

Fes, Morocco

The Chouara Tannery, located in the heart of the medina, stands as one of the oldest operating leather tanneries in the world. Established in the 11th century, it has functioned continuously for almost a millennium, preserving traditional leather craftsmanship. The site features a dense network of stone vats filled with various dyes and liquids used for processing animal hides. The vats are surrounded by the densely packed, multi-story white buildings of the old city. Many of the surrounding rooftops and terraces are draped with animal skins laid out to dry in the sun. Next to the tannery area, a large paved parking lot filled with cars provides a stark contrast to the historic industrial site. The sprawling cityscape, with its numerous white and beige structures extending toward the hills in the distance, is visible beyond the tannery. The complete scope of this ancient industrial site and the surrounding medina architecture is captured in this comprehensive 360-degree panorama.
