Historic Sqala du Port d’Essaouira Fortress

Essaouira, Morocco

Sqala du Port d’Essaouira is one of the key fortified elements of the old port, built in the 18th century to defend the harbor and support the planned maritime role of the city. Although the Portuguese once held a fortress at Mogador in the early 16th century, the existing port fortifications were constructed much later under Moroccan rule, which makes the common Portuguese attribution incorrect. The ramparts, corner towers, and open artillery platform create a stark stone landscape above the water, with views stretching across the port basin and Atlantic shoreline. This virtual walk moves through that exposed coastal setting, showing the fortress as a functional military structure integrated into the historic fabric of Essaouira.
