The port of Essaouira stands as a vital part of the maritime heritage in Morocco. The historic harbor entrance is marked by the Porte de la Marine, built under the direction of Ahmed el Inglizi, also known as Ahmed El Alj. A large concrete basin holds dozens of traditional wooden fishing boats painted in a uniform blue color. Local fishermen and utility vehicles occupy the wide concrete docks around the moored fleet. Further into the harbor area, larger fishing vessels unload their daily fresh fish catch for processing and trade. Numerous seagulls fly above the docks and the water, drawn by the active maritime operations.
