Uta el-Hammam Square near Kasbah Castle (Morocco, Chefchaouen)

Uta el-Hammam Square is the central gathering place in Chefchaouen’s medina, surrounded by traditional cafés, shops, and historic buildings. The square is a lively hub where both locals and visitors relax, enjoying the atmosphere of the blue city. Its open space provides a contrast to the winding alleys of the medina, making it a popular meeting point. From here, the city’s unique blend of Andalusian and Moroccan influences is evident in the architecture, from arched doorways to colorful tilework.

Overlooking the square is the Kasbah, a historic fortress with high red walls and a serene garden inside. Originally built in the 15th century, the Kasbah now houses a museum displaying artifacts from Chefchaouen’s past, including traditional clothing, weapons, and historical photographs. Climbing to the top of the tower offers panoramic views of the medina and the Rif Mountains beyond. Together, Uta el-Hammam Square and the Kasbah form the heart of Chefchaouen, reflecting its rich history and vibrant culture.
